Some Interesting Insights Into the Art World

Here are some interesting insights into the art world from infamous art writer Anthony Haden-Guest including this quote from Phaidon’s website:

Tell us something about the art world that no one knows?
When I was at college, if you talked to a bunch of kids interested in the arts, they’d have said, “yeah, Picasso is good, but Jean-Luc Godard, and Michelangelo Antonioni – that’s where the action is.” Rock music and movies were exciting, and art was aside. Now, I think art and the language of art have become absolutely dominant, while rock music has become very corporate.

Some Thoughts on Photography and Creativity

“The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.” – Dorothea Lange

Description
Photography provides a unique way for us to interact with and thus understand the world. With it we can create snapshots at a fraction of a second or collect light over long durations to produce stunning images of unseen beauty. Even in it’s common practice photography can help us see the exotic in the familiar. It is unlike writing, applying formulas, generating statistics, creating flow charts or diagrams. The mechanical nature of photography allows us to engage our surroundings both logically and intuitively. As we immerse ourselves in the picture taking process we are able to expand our experiences and deepen the understanding we have of our selves and our surroundings. Utilizing an ongoing cycle of exploration and discovery allows us to reveal unseen nuances and details that make us more perceptive. In this way photography can help us to create possibilities for insights, innovation and creativity.

Creative Inspiration from Outer Space

Check out this amazing time lapse video of images taken from the International Space Station. The views are spectacular! I especially like the lightning storms, the aurora borealis and the city lights at night. I find this perspective very inspiring.

This is an amazing collection of photographs by astronauts from space. The quality of light is magical!

New abstract color photographs

These are some new abstract color photographs made recently in Vero Beach. I am interested in the way the photographs bring out the colors, iridescence, textures and depth found on a the surface of a commonly overlooked object. What’s beneath the surface?

The Creative Genius Of Edward Weston

Artists struggle in “the new” all the time. Creating form where there was none. Edward Weston’s Daybooks are full of his thoughts as explored the medium of photography and created what we now consider to be “the standards”. I find it fascinating to observe his thoughts as he explores light and form of simple objects to create beauty.

Photograph Inspired by Quantum Physics & Cosmology

A recent color photograph inspired by quantum physics & cosmology. This is a straight photograph with no manipulation. I like the way it looks like a rip in the space-time continuum or a glimpse into a parallel universe. Click the image for a larger view.
