Creative color photography from Creative Sparks photographer Nancy Alderman

This week’s featured image from Creative Sparks is by photographer Nancy Alderman. Nancy has been exploring water as a theme for the past few months. She brought this water photograph to share with us last night.

I enjoy the quiet simplicity of this image. The ripples in the water, the blue color and the squiggled reflections of the dock are all very soothing. Nancy brought the image in as a rectangle. We decided the photograph became more about composition, lines and color and less about location when we cropped it to the square you see here.

Compositionally the photograph is a study in lines. Emotionally the image has a beautiful sense of quiet and solitude. Very nice!

Interesting Quote On Art & Photography From William Wegman

December 2nd is William Wegman’s birthday. Yes, he’s the guy with the amazing Weimaraners and witty sense of humor. Here’s a quote from Wegman on how became interested in photography and video as tools for making his art.

“My background is in painting but in school in the sixties, like many artists of that time, I believed that painting was dead. I began to work in collaboration with other artists in the creation of performances and installation works. Soon after, I started making video and photographic works and in the process became fascinated with the media itself. Before long I was setting things up just for the camera. In l970 I got a dog and he turned out to be very interested in video and photography as well.” – William Wegman

Recent Food Photography in Vero Beach – Quail Valley Golf Club

Here are some photos from a recent shoot for Vero Home, Life & Design magazine celebrating food on the Treasure Coast. I was very fortunate to work with some of the most creative and talented chefs in Vero Beach including Chef Mark Edmonds of Patisserie, Chef Scott Varricchio of Citrus Grillhouse, Chef Joe Faria of Quail Valley Golf Club and Chef Leanne Kelleher of The Tides. Their passion for food was inspiring!

These particular photos were created with Chef Joe Faria of Quail Valley Golf Club and feature his Braised Quail and Orange Black Tea Roasted Duck.

You can see more delicious food photos from this shoot in the October/November issue of Vero Home, Life & Design or by visiting my commercial photography portfolio.

All of these chefs were VERY generous with their time and talent. I encourage to you visit their restaurants to experience some of the best food in Vero Beach and the Treasure Coast. You’ll be glad you did!

For Chef Joe Faria’s delicious Orange Black Tea Roasted Duck visit this page on the Vero Home, Life & Design Magazine website.

Quote To Inspire Your Creativity From Jimi Hendrix

The amazing musician and guitarist Jimi Hendrix was born on November 27, 1942. In honor of his upcoming birthday here’s an inspiring quote to inspire your creativity.

“Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens.” – Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix Quotes

Jimi Hendrix

As eloquently stated on JimiHendrix.com, Jimi was “Widely recognized as one of the most creative and influential musicians of the 20th century, Jimi Hendrix pioneered the explosive possibilities of the electric guitar. Hendrix’s innovative style of combining fuzz, feedback and controlled distortion created a new musical form. Because he was unable to read or write music, it is nothing short of remarkable that Jimi Hendrix’s meteoric rise in the music took place in just four short years. His musical language continues to influence a host of modern musicians, from George Clinton to Miles Davis, and Steve Vai to Jonny Lang.”

Here are some of my favorite Jimi Hendrix albums and books.

Inspiring Quote On Art By Alberto Giacometti

“The object of art is not to reproduce reality, but to create a reality of the same intensity.” – Alberto Giacometti

Henri Cartier-Bresson, Alberto Giacometti In His Studio, 1961

Henri Cartier-Bresson, Alberto Giacometti In His Studio, 1961

From the New York Times – “Giacometti was an articulate, self-confident and well-informed artist whose sculptures and paintings are ravaged by uncertainty and doubt. His intelligence, independence and generosity fascinated artists and writers like André Breton, Jean Genet, Pablo Picasso and Jean-Paul Sartre. His familiar but exceptionally elusive work has left a mark on painters and sculptors as different as David Smith, Louise Bourgeois, Barnett Newman, Susan Rothenberg, Mark di Suvero and Bryan Hunt.”

For more images and information on Alberto Giacometti visit the Museum of Modern Art and Guggenheim Museum websites.

These are some great books on Alberto Giacometti and his fascinating sculptures.

Creative photography ideas from Creative Sparks photographer Nancy Alderman

This week’s featured image comes from Creative Sparks photographer Nancy Alderman. Nancy has been exploring water as a theme recently and brought this amazing image to share with us last night.

Nancy Alderman, Water Drop, 2013

Nancy Alderman, Water Drop, 2013

I am immediately drawn to the bold composition of this photograph. The contrasty light, strong diagonals and crisp droplet of water captivate my attention. As I look closer at the water droplet I notice the detailed lines from the plant in the background. I find the contrast between the organic and geometric very compelling. This image is imaginative, beautiful and captivating.

Thank you Nancy!

Quote On Art And Creativity From Pablo Picasso

“I paint objects as I think them, not as I see them.” – Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso, Ma Jolie, 1911-1912

Pablo Picasso, Ma Jolie, 1911-1912

“The Cubist painters rejected the inherited concept that art should copy nature, or that they should adopt the traditional techniques of perspective, modeling, and foreshortening. They wanted instead to emphasize the two-dimensionality of the canvas. So they reduced and fractured objects into geometric forms, and then realigned these within a shallow, relieflike space. They also used multiple or contrasting vantage points.” Quote from the Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History.

Abstract Color Photography Ideas From Creative Sparks Photographer Bill Lord

This week’s featured image from my Creative Sparks creativity/photography class comes from Bill Lord. Many of Bill’s images are abstract, some using post-processing techniques in Photoshop and NIK, others are straight photographs using only the the camera to create abstract yet representational images.

Bill Lord, Thresholds, Color Photograph, 2013

Bill Lord, Thresholds, Color Photograph, 2013

This is a fantastic image full of depth and mystery. I am particularly drawn to the large translucent green spirals that lead my eye around and back into the photograph. The purple and green highlights push back and forth adding to the depth of this cosmic image and sparking my imagination.
