I’m fascinated by the form of the curling wave rising from the flowing water. I almost looks like it’s made of ice or crystal. The contrast between the sharp edge of the wave and water on the left against the smooth, flowing water on the right creates a nice sense of energy, movement and harmony. The touch of green adds just enough color to make the image “pop”. Very nice!

Thanks Nancy!

Creative Photography Idea by Creative Sparks Photographer Nancy Alderman

There were many great photos at Creative Sparks last Thursday making it difficult to highlight just one. This week’s featured creative photography idea comes from photographer Nancy Alderman. Nancy recently took a trip to Iceland and brought back some beautiful images and some delicious chocolate to share. How did she know?

I really love the sense of light and color in this image. It’s very peaceful and relaxing. The contrast between the dark lava rocks, green mountains, snow caps and the suggestion of soft clouds is beautiful. The layers of curved horizontal lines make an interesting composition.

Great work Nancy!

Creative photography from Creative Sparks photographer Jenna Lanam

This weeks featured image from my Creative Sparks creative photography class comes from Jenna Lanam.

I’m immediately drawn to the vibrant colors and crystalized bubbles in this image. As I look closer the bubbles appear to be floating upwards from right to left contrasting the movement of the colors which seem to be moving from left to right.

There’s also an interesting push-pull interaction between the colors and bubbles. The crisp bubbles push forwards at first but then they are pulled into the background as the saturated colors push to the foreground. An interesting effect creating lots of movement.

I also like the contrast between representation and abstraction within the image.

Thanks Jenna!

Creative photography from Creative Sparks by Mike Brown

This week’s featured image from Creative Sparks comes from Mike Brown.

Wow! This image really pops! I love the bold use of color and unexpected perspective in this photograph. The sense of space is also very interesting as the diagonal lines and repeating circles bring my eye up to the top right of the image while the blue sky and clouds move the eye in back into the space of the bottom left. I also like the play of patterns and of course, the iridescent light.

Inspiring Quote On Photography By Richard Avedon

Here’s a great quote on photography from the great portrait photographer Richard Avedon.

“A portrait is not a likeness. The moment an emotion or fact is transformed into a photograph it is no longer a fact but an opinion. There is no such thing as inaccuracy in a photograph. All photographs are accurate. None of them is the truth. ” – Richard Avedon

Funny Quote On Photography

It’s Monday morning and this quote gave me a chuckle. Although Abraham Lincoln wasn’t a photographer, his dog Fido was the first Presidential dog ever to be photographed.

“There are no bad pictures; that’s just how your face looks sometimes.”
– Abraham Lincoln

Creative Photography Ideas from Creative Sparks Photographer Lee Chestnut

This week’s featured photograph from Creative Sparks comes from photographer Lee Chestnut. Lee has been working along several paths recently. Some of his work explores witty or unexpected juxtapositions, in other work he combines multiple photographs in Photoshop to create entirely new compositions and along a third path Lee explores the pure joy of seeing.

The textures and lines of this deceptively simple photograph draw me in and invite me to explore the image. As I do I notice a confusion of space as the white lines lead me back into a perceived 3rd dimension. This depth perception is counterbalanced by the texture of the pavement which appears as a flat, 2-dimensional surface. I also notice that the white lines suggest a 3-dimensional structure resembling a ladder lying in the ground.

I really enjoy the simplicity and sense of spontaneity of this image. The textures, sense of light and confusion of space give me a lot to look at as I explore it in detail. Thanks Lee!

Photographing Time As The Fourth Dimension

Fong Qi Wei has a creative technique for photographing time as the fourth dimension. To create the images for his series Time is a Dimension, the Signapore-based photographer shoots around sunrise or sunset capturing a sequence of images over a 2-4 hour period. He then composites the slices together in either straight lines or concentric circles to show the changing light and the passage of time in a single digital photograph.

Alfred Stieglitz had a profound influence on modern art in America. He was known not only as a brilliant photographer but also as a gallery owner who championed photography as art. In addition, he used his New York galleries to promote the modernist vision of many great American artists including John Marin, Marsden Hartley, Paul Strand, Arthur Dove, and his wife, Georia O’Keefe. Stieglitz was also was the first gallery owner to show the work of the European avant garde artists including Auguste Rodin, Henri Matisse, Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso at his famed gallery 291.

The photograph above from the collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of Stieglitz’s Equivalents. These early abstract photographs were intended to represent inner states of emotion through form, texture, shape and line. You can see more of Stieglitz’s Equivalents at The Phillips Collection.
