Creative photography idea from Creative Sparks photographer Nancy Alderman

This week’s creative photography ideas comes from Creative Sparks photographer Nancy Alderman. Those of you who know me or are familiar with my work know my enthusiasm for images that are cosmic, celestial, mysterious and even spiritual. This image strikes me because of it’s ethereal beauty. Even though it’s a straight photograph of the moon it is full of emotion. Nancy’s perspective which integrates the moon within the soft green leaves in the foreground gives the image a wonderful sense of depth and mystery. The luminous color of the sky is amazing and contributes to the image’s soothing and magical qualities.

Observations – Street Art Wynwood Art District Miami

We had a great trip to Miami on Saturday to check out the Wynwood Art District Art Walk. Of course we stopped at Versailles for an amazing cafe con leche before heading over to Wynwood. We arrived as a film crew was breaking down their lighting equipment. Apparently they used Versailles as a location for a new film by Jon Favreau called Chef. The movie is about a chef in L.A. who looses his restaurant job and decides to open a food truck. The lighting geek in me was happy to see the truckloads of lighting equipment.

I grabbed this shot as we were walking out of Now Contemporary Art. Their current show Timeless Matter features art made of simple materials including buttons, pencils, zip ties and cut up cartoon strips. It must of put me in a “colorful” frame of mind because this image struck me immediately. I shot 2 frames and walked on. I love the pop of the color against the black wall as well as the contrast between the concrete wall and the soft, floating clouds in the background. Pure fun!

Inspiring Quote On Photography By Stephen Shore

Here’s an interesting quote on photography from Stephen Shore to get you thinking creatively.

“There’s something arbitrary about taking a picture. So I can stand at the edge of a highway and take one step forward and it can be a natural landscape untouched by man and I can take one step back and include a guardrail and change the meaning of the picture radically… I can take a picture of a person at one moment and make them look contemplative and photograph them two seconds later and make them look frivolous.” – Stephen Shore

To learn more about the visual language of photography check out Stephen Shore’s excellent book, The Nature of Photographs: A Primer. It’s a combination of great images from photographers including Robert Frank, Walker Evans, Thomas Struth, Garry Winogrand, Alfred Stieglitz, Brassai, Andreas Gursky, William Eggleston and essays by Shore on the nature of photographs.

To see more of Shore’s photography check out this survey of his work: Stephen Shore (Contemporary Artists). The book contains insightful interviews and essays as well as photographs by Shore.

From the book description: “Stephen Shore (b. 1947) is a true artistic innovator whose work has opened up new frontiers for contemporary photography. His photographs of American scenes unveil the exceptional beauty to be found in the everyday. As one of the first art photographers to work in color, Shore pioneered such contemporary genres as the diaristic snapshot (later taken up by Nan Goldin and Wolfgang Tillmans) and the monumentalized landscape (as later practiced by Becher-school photographers Thomas Struth and Andreas Gursky). This monograph offers the first complete examination of Shore’s long and storied career, from his residency at Warhol’s Factory to his experiments in conceptual photography; from his landmark series AMERICAN SURFACES to his continued exploration of emerging techniques. Shore’s high-key portraits of America’s chromatic landscape can be found in the permanent collections of major museums all over the world.”

Inspiring photo from Creative Sparks – Bill Lord

This week’s featured photograph from my Creative Sparks creativity workshop is by Bill Lord. Bill recently began coming to Creative Sparks after taking a long hiatus from photography. Here’s a photograph he made over the weekend while exploring a local scrapyard with his camera.

Bill Lord, Once Mighty, Color Photograph, 2013

Bill Lord, Once Mighty, Color Photograph, 2013

Bill has an affinity for abstract photographs like the image seen here as well as images manipulated into the psychedelic realm using photo-editing software such as Photoshop and NIK. This straight color photograph presents an interesting contrast between the “once mighty” steel gears which are sharp and bold in the foreground and the soft rust reclaiming the mighty machine. The color palette of the photograph is very warm and inviting, a sharp contrast from aggressive gears and the rebar which seems to have jammed any possibility of mechanical progress.

Bill’s background in music, art and the humanities comes through strongly in his photographs.

Observations – Cosmos

Here’s one of my most recent photographs inspired by cosmology and spirituality. It’s a straight color photograph I converted to black & white and added a touch of blue to in the process. I like the celestial and organic qualities as well as the illusion of infinite depth. I find the photograph very mysterious yet familiar.

Minor White Quote On The Power Of Photography

I love this quote on the power of photography from Minor White. Can you think of any images that you hold in your memory? Why do they have power?

“The reason why we want to remember an image varies: because we simply ‘love it,’ or dislike it so intensely that it becomes compulsive, or because it has made us realize something about ourselves, or has brought about some slight change in us. Perhaps the reader can recall some image, after the seeing of which he has never been quite the same.” – Minor White

Minor White was a highly influential photographer, teacher, theoretician and critic. He pursued his own creative vision while working with some of the most important photographers of the 20th Century including Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston and Ansel Adams. You can find out more about Minor White and his photography, philosophy and influence in this biography at the Lee Gallery website.

To see more photographs by Minor White visit the Museum of Modern Art website here.

Here are some of the great photography books by Minor White.

If you like books on photography theory this is an amazing collection of essays and photographs from Aperture Magazine while Minor White was editor.

From Amazon’s book description: “Published on the occasion of its sixtieth anniversary, this is the first ever anthology of Aperture magazine. This long-awaited overview provides a selection of the best critical writing from the first 25 years of the magazine–the period spanning the tenure of cofounder and editor Minor White. Aperture was established in 1952 by a group of photographers, including Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, Barbara Morgan and historian-curators Beaumont and Nancy Newhall. Their intention was to provide a forum “in which photographers can talk straight to each other, discuss the problems that face photography as profession an art, share their experiences, comment on what goes on, descry the new potentials.” With its far-ranging interests in diverse photographic styles, myriad themes and subjects (including a strong streak of spirituality in diverse forms) and an adventurous commitment to a broad international range, Aperture has had a profound impact on the course of fine-art photography. The texts and visuals in this anthology were selected by Peter C. Bunnell, White’s protégé and an early member of the Aperture staff, who went on to become a major force in photography as an influential writer, curator and professor. Several articles are reproduced in facsimile, and the publication is enlivened throughout by other features, including a portfolio of exceptional covers, as well as a selection of the colophons (short statements or quotes) that appeared at the front of each magazine.”

Inspiring garden photography from Creative Sparks – Bob Webster

This week’s featured photograph from my Creative Sparks creativity workshop is by Bob Webster. I first met Bob while doing a photography demo at the Vero Beach Museum of Art where he told me of his passion for travel and photographing gardens. Since then Bob has taken my photography classes at the museum and become an active member of Creative Sparks.

Bob just got back from a nice long visit to the U.K. and shared many beautiful photographs with us last night. Here is one of my favorites.

Bob has developed a wonderful eye for creating order within complexity. On first glance many of his photographs seem quite simple and quiet. Studying them over time reveals a deep complexity of shapes, textures and colors with just enough tension and movement to make the photograph interesting. I am drawn to the repetition of circles and lines in this photo as well as the beautiful colors in the flowers and buds.

Originally from New England Bob finds his inspiration in nature, gardens and the photography of Elliot Porter.

Observations – Waterfall at Costa d’Este Vero Beach

I took this photograph of the waterfall at the entrance to the Costa d’Este Beach Resort in Vero Beach, Florida last week while exploring the beachside. I’m fascinated by the contrast between the organic flow of the water on the left and the architectural geometry on the right of this photo. I am also drawn to the celestial quality separating the water from the concrete and the way the image looks like two images when in fact it’s a single photograph.

Great Quote About Photography From John Szarkowski

Here’s provocative quote on photography from John Szarkowski:

“Photography is a contest between a photographer and the presumptions of approximate and habitual seeing. The contest can be held anywhere…”

John Szarkowski was the Director of Photography at The Museum of Modern Art in NYC from 1962-1991. In addition to his classic books on photography he has written essays for photography books by William Eggleston, Eugene Atget, Garry Winogrand and Ansel Adams.

The New York Times writes, “In the early 1960’s, when Mr. Szarkowski (pronounced Shar-COW-ski) began his curatorial career, photography was commonly perceived as a utilitarian medium, a means to document the world. Perhaps more than anyone, Mr. Szarkowski changed that perception. For him, the photograph was a form of expression as potent and meaningful as any work of art, and as director of photography at the Modern for almost three decades, beginning in 1962, he was perhaps its most impassioned advocate. Two of his books, “The Photographer’s Eye,” (1964) and “Looking at Photographs: 100 Pictures From the Collection of the Museum of Modern Art” (1973), remain syllabus staples in art history programs.”

For more on Szarkowski’s fascinating career and the photographers he championed visit John Szarkwoski’s Obituary in The New York Times as well as this article from The Guardian Was John Szarkowski the most influential person in 20th-century photography?

Here are 2 of the best books on the History of Photography by John Szarkowski. They truly belong in every photographer’s library. Looking at Photographs: 100 Pictures from the Collection of The Museum of Modern Art The Photographer’s Eye.

Creative Photography Ideas From Creative Sparks Creativity Workshop – Jenna Lanam

Sometimes it’s nice to get out of town to get a fresh perspective on things. This week’s featured photograph from my Creative Sparks creativity workshop is by Jenna Lanam. The image was taken on her recent trip to St. Augustine, Florida.

I am especially drawn to the simplicity of this image. The bold geometry and subtle textures provide a wonderful background for the single figure smoking on what appears to be a work break. His bright red tee shirt creates a nice color contrast that really makes the image pop. I’m also fascinated by the complex space of the photo created by the different textures and light.
