Quote About Light From Artist Wynn Bullock

“As sounds in a musical composition can be used not to express physical objects but ideas, emotions, harmonies, rhythmic orders and most any expression of the human mind and spirit, so light can be used visually to express the mind and spirit.” – Wynn Bullock

Check out this fascinating video on Bullock’s color light abstractions and learn how Bullock explored the expressive potential of color photography using light as material.

Abstract Color Photography From Creative Sparks Photographer Bill Lord

Last night was the last Creative Sparks session for the summer as I’ll be teaching Discovering Your Creative Vision at the Vero Beach Museum of Art on Thursday evenings beginning June 19th. I want to thank all of you for making Creative Sparks so inspiring!

Here’s this week’s featured image.

I really enjoy Bill’s curiosity and inventiveness. Inspired by the abstract color photographs of Wynn Bullock, Bill has created a “science lab” where he can explore color, light and textures. This is one of the images from his “lab”. The bold lines and intense colors immediately draw me in for a closer look. I’m rewarded by nuances of color, textures and lines as I explore the image in more detail. I find myself getting lost in the pools of color on the middle left and bottom center third of the image.

Nice work Bill!

Inspiring Quote On Photography From Josef Sudek

“Everything around us, dead or alive, in the eyes of a crazy photographer mysteriously takes on many variations, so that a seemingly dead object comes to life through light or by its surroundings. And if the photographer has a bit of sense in his head maybe he is able to capture some of this—and I suppose that’s lyricism.” – Josef Sudek

“During a legendary career that spanned almost six decades, Czech photographer Josef Sudek, the ‘poet of Prague,’ developed a craftsmanship and technical virtuosity that was unparalleled among his contemporaries. Early in his career, though the prevailing art movements of the 1920s and ’30s included cubism, surrealism, and the Czech avant-garde, Sudek sought his own approach characterized by a striking mastery of light.” – Introduction to Josef Sudek: The Legacy of a Deeper Vision by Maia-Mari Sutnik

From Focal Press – “Working in Prague all his life, Sudek devoted himself to creating a portrait of his city, with mystical panoramic views of its streets and buildings, poetic still life images taken from his studio window and atmospheric depictions of his garden. His magical orchestration of rich, dark tones and the ethereal luminescence of his highlights render Sudek’s world in a spiritual and dream-like tone, where light is substance. The difficulties in Sudek’s life, the loss of his right arm during World War I and the hardships suffered during the Nazi and Soviet occupations of Prague, color his evocative and emotional work. Despite his handicap, he used large view cameras, including a 12 x 20 panoramic format that he wielded both horizontally and vertically, photographing without the help of an assistant. He compiled seven books of Prague photographs, working in the streets until old age and his physical limitations made it too difficult to haul his cameras around.”

Here are some amazing books featuring the photography of Josef Sudek. Many of his photographs are remarkable in their beauty and poetry. I am particularly drawn to his photographs from Labrynths and The Window of My Studio.

Caffeine Inspires Interior Photographer In Florida – Windsor, Vero Beach, Florida

I had a great day shooting interiors in a beautiful home in Windsor yesterday. I used this “sparkling espresso” as a prop and power booster enjoying some nice caffeine inspiration throughout the day! It reminded me of the BeBe Cafe Tony Soluri and I drank while photographing the Hyatt Grand Wailea Resort & Spa on Maui back in the day.

Interior photographs to follow soon!

Photograph From Creative Sparks Photographer Bob Webster

Last night’s Creative Sparks session was inspiring as always. We discussed discovering your creative vision and the idea of photography as means of exploration and discovery. We also continued our conversation about chaos and order from last week.

Bob Webster has an intuitive ability to reveal structure within chaos and build layers of depth and texture. Here’s an example from his last trip to England.

The limited palette and contrast between sharp lines and blurred color pique my curiosity. The layers, texture and movement keep me engaged and spark my imagination. I’m drawn to the bold lines in this photograph as well as the sense of dimension. As I contemplate the image I’m reminded of a close-up of a strand of DNA.

Inspiring Quote On Creativity From Austin Kleon

Last weekend I read a great little book on being creative by Austin Kleon. The book, Show Your Work!, is his follow-up to Steal Like An Artist!. It’s full of inspiration and motivation in 10 short steps.

I found this great little quote within the sketches at the back of the book.

“Not-knowing is the engine that creativity runs on. Some of my best ideas at the beginning, I literally can’t tell if they’re slight or profound.” – Austin Kleon

Great Quote On Art, Science & Photography From Adam Fuss

Here’s a great quote on art, science and photography from artist Adam Fuss.

“I was attracted to photography because it was technical, full of gadgets, and I was obsessed with science. But at some point around fifteen or sixteen, I had a sense that photography could provide a bridge from the world of science to the world of art, or image. Photography was a means of crossing into a new place I didn’t know.” – Adam Fuss

Widely known for his evocative and mysterious images Fuss uses the darkroom to create camera-less photograms that engage the “discovery of the unseen, the expression of the ephemeral and the universal themes of life and death”.

Adam Fuss, From the series 'My Ghost' (Butterfly Daguerreotype) Daguerrotype, Cheim & Read Gallery, New York

Adam Fuss, From the series ‘My Ghost’ (Butterfly Daguerreotype) Daguerrotype, Cheim & Read Gallery, New York

“The butterfly is a classic symbol of the brevity of life, its flight standing for the passage of the soul. It is captured here in an obsolescent technique, that of daguerreotype. Made on silvered copper plates, daguerreotypes were invented in the 1840s and used mainly for portraiture. Here the plate has been intentionally overexposed, producing a shimmering blue.” – Victoria & Albert Museum

For more insight into Adam Fuss’s ideas, creative process and photograms check out this short video produced as part of the exhibition Shadow Catchers: Camera-less Photography by the V&A Museum.
