Impact 100 Announces Photo Contest

Impact 100, the women’s philanthropic organization that has awarded more than $1.2 million dollars in grants in the past four years to Indian River non-profits, has announced a photo contest open to amateur photographers in the county. There is no entry fee to participate. The winner will receive $250; second place, $175; and third place $100. An anonymous donor has donated the prize money on behalf of Impact 100. The photos will be used in videos and various publications for Impact 100.

“The photos should depict the essence of what Impact 100 is all about,” explains Vice President, Communications Martha Lemasters. “We will assign each of the photographers to two of our community partners to take photographs. We are looking for the humanity of our grants…the achievement of our grants in touching photos depicting an end result,” she explains. Each photographer can enter up to 12 images for consideration. For more information about Impact 100 contestants should refer to the Impact 100 video now playing on Youtube.com http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnpP2yrvBbg.

Brian Eno’s Day of Light Video

Brian Eno recently published this video he created in collaboration with his listeners on Saturday 17 November 2012. His new album of ambient music entitled “Lux” was broadcast 4 times that day corresponding to sunrise, day, sunset & night. Listeners were encouraged to upload photos that captured the light in their location at the time of day. The result is very beautiful, peaceful & meditative. Enjoy!

I have been a fan of Brian Eno’s music and ideas for many years. I often listen to his ambient music when I want to get into a creative frame of mind. It’s also great for reading and relaxing.

To learn more about Brian Eno and his amazing strategies for creativity I encourage you to visit the Creativity Books section of in my bookshop.

What is Art?

“Meaningful art, in any medium, is mind changing, challenging the prejudices of conventional thought. In this role, art lives between the known and the unknown, communicating what it discovers in this ambiguous territory.” – Duane Preble

This is an interesting quote from Duane Preble’s introduction to the book “Tao of Photography: Seeing Beyond Seeing”.  I agree with Preble that for art to be meaningful it should move us in some way and change the way we think about or perceive the world around us. Think about the last great work of art you saw. How did it move you, shift your perceptions, mood or mind? Did it get you to reconsider a believe or open you to seeing things in a new way?

The idea of art living between the known and the unknown is another interesting idea raised by Preble. Living in this space is one of the most exciting and terrifying aspects of being an artist. Rollo May discusses brilliantly in his wonderful book “The Courage To Create”.

Both books are highly recommended for those of you would like become more creative in your work and life.

At it’s best art can wake us up and help us live a more creative and richer life!

Celebrating The Life And Art Of Jackson Pollock

Jackson Pollock was born on January 28, 1912. He was deeply influenced by the work of Picasso and the ideas of Carl Jung. Pollock pushed abstraction to new levels with his famous drip paintings made between 1947 and 1950. Breaking free of the brush to canvas method of painting Pollock used sticks and brushes to fling and drip the paint, sand and other objects onto a canvas usually placed on the floor.

A Fantastic Book About Modern & Contemporary Art

Do you often find yourself scratching your head while looking at Modern or Contemporary Art? This is a great guide to the art movements over the last 150 years starting with Pre-Impressionism. Will Gompertz,  former director of the Tate Gallery in London, does a fantastic job of bringing art to life. He describes the inspirations, reactions and attitudes surrounding the Modern & Contemporary Art. This is not a dull list of names and dates but an engaging web of stories behind some most beautiful and most confusing Art in the History of Art.

I have included a video trailer for the book below and a link to purchase the book at Amazon. Check them out, you won’t be disappointed!
